OSCAR THE CAT

July 26th, 2007

This is a strange story which you may have heard about. I recently spent several weeks in the hospital and for reasons your will see I am very glad this cat didn’t come to see me! It seems that Oscar, a resident of a nursing home, curls up to patients who are nearing the end of their life. It is a mystery as to how he knows or senses this informatiion and for that matter why he chooses to spend the time with these patients. We can’t anothropormorphize this to say he is comforting them in their final hours but it is amazing. He has even been written up in a medical journal, The New England Journal of Medicine. The story sure does let us know how little we know about the animals we share this earth with! Here’s Oscar…….

THE REAL REASON FOR GLOBAL WARMING!

June 2nd, 2007

This was sent to me and I thought you might enjoy. Of course, I can’t stop being a zoo docent and not ask what is wrong with this picture? If you have been reading my blog you will see immediately that since all polar bears live in the Northern hemiphere and all penguins live in the Southern Hemiphere then no polar bear in the wild could possibly roast a penguin but it is funny anyway. I am especially fond of the bear with the iPOD! Take a look!

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY! AND CONFUSED PENGUIN!

May 13th, 2007

Hey! Happy Mother’s Day to all of you out there - may your day be filled with family, flowers, maybe some chocolate! My family is coming to visit and I can’t wait!

Did you see in the news that a Magellanic penguin who normally inhabits Southern Chile has managed to swim some 3000 miles away from home, arriving a Peru! Now that’s one busy
penguin - problrem arrises since the new territory is inhabited by Humbolt penguins and they probably wont accept him. But scientists are trying to contact his home and return him as soon as possible. Here’s a look at him!

THE DON IMUS THING!

April 12th, 2007

I haven’t posted for awhile but this Don Imus thing is getting to me. Personally I don’t watch the show and have never seen him on TV. He made an incredibly distasteful and mean comment about the Rutgers women basketball team and now he has been fired. What I am disturbed about is the incredible lack of forgiveness and redemption for someone who has apologized over and over again. I am not excusing his action in any way but religious leaders as the Rev.’s Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton seem unable to grant forgivenss which I thought was a basic tennent of most religions. Threre is a comment that the young women who were the brunt of the slur have to live with this forever, etc. etc., - well, I don’t think so! They have shown themselves to be remarkably dignified and intelligently responsive to this situation and I am absolutely convinced they will move on with their lives and sports careers! Now if everyone else could please just move on.

STOP GLOBAL WARMING BANNERS FOR YOUR BLOGS!

February 7th, 2007

Just noticed that you can get “stop global warming” banners, etc., to paste into your blogs and webites here. It is a great site with massive amounts of information on the subject well worth exploring. Here is an example of the kind of banner you can display. We now know that global warming is real and it devastates me to think that my trip to see the polar bears in Churchill, Canada, may be a trip of the past very soon and that these magnificent animals are on the way to extinction because of our activities. Obviously the loss of polar bears is just one small aspect of an overwhelming probem but it touches me particularly because of my trip.

GREETINGS IN THE NEW YEAR!

January 29th, 2007

It has been a long time since I have posted but I had surgery at the beginning of the New Year after a return of Ovarian Cancer which I have been struggling with since 2002. This time it was much more difficult and tomorrow I will begin a new course of chemotherapy. Believe me, cancer sucks and worse it pulls EVERYONE around you in with you and they suffer as much or probably more than you do, especially family which feels absoutely helpless. Wish me well.

I was sent a strange article from the internet which I thought I would share. In Manchester, England, a female Komodo Dragon, a highly endangered species, produced 5 baby Komodos as a result of a virgin birth! Yes, I said virgin birth! Flora, the mother, managed this feat without a male partner or even being near one. Apparently this has happened one other time. Some reptile and fish species do reproduce through a process called parthenogenesis but I am thinking she snuck out one night to meet a handsome suitor (sic) - how about you! anyway, here is one of the babies!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

December 23rd, 2006

To those of you who celebrate Christmas, I wish you and yours a joyous, happy and healthy Christmas. And a wish for peace and sanity in the world! Someone sent me this e-card which I think is one of the most charming I have seen - it is interactive; the music is lovely and relaxing - take a minute to enjoy it here!

HAPPY HANUKKAH!

December 17th, 2006

For those of you that celebrate Hanukkah I wanted to wish you a wonderful holiday filled with wonderful food but most of all, time to spend with family and friends! I celebrate both Christmas and Hanukkah in my house and it is always very special when the two holidays are this close together. Enjoy!

CHRISTMAS TREES DOWN, CHRISTMAS TREES UP!

December 13th, 2006

Apparently, the Christmas Trees are going back up at Seattle Airport! That would be the ones that were taken down in response to “threat” by rabbi who wanted a menorrah. Can you imagine that we are talking about 14 plastic trees with red ribbons and bows? Just think what would happen if we were talking about something REALLY important! Let me see, I have a plastic tree in my living room (it really is nice!) but oh boy, I also have a menorrah (it really is nice too) in the same room - let’s see, should I take the tree down but then I should take the menorrah down and then I could put the tree back up but then I would have to put the menorrah back up………. oh this is exhausting! HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYBODY! ;)

BARNEY CAM!

December 12th, 2006

Maybe the story about taking down the trees in the Seattle airport got to me but this story is absolutely unbelievable. Here is Barney, one of the White House dogs, in his holiday cam with a full cast of characters led by you know who! Now I love dogs and all but this video took a whole lot of time and effort to produce and doesn’t “he” have something else to do - like wars? I was outraged at this thing but you decide for yourself! Take a look - it’s long but in a few minutes you will get the idea!
You can see this video here Click on the “video” link!
And here’s Barney!
