“YESTERDAY” A STUNNING FILM!

Last night I stumbled upon a stunning film called “Yesterday” directed by Darrell James Roodt, the first Zulu-language film to be released internationally. It is about Yesterday, a young mother’s brave, elegant and magnificent struggle to raise her daughter in a poor African village after she learns she is HIV positive. Yes, that is her name and her daughter’s name is “Beauty”! It chronicals her struggle and desire to live long enough to see her daughter enter school. The odds are terribly much against her both from predjudice in her community, impossible odds against getting treatment and a husband who is in denial. If all this sounds too grimto watch it definitely is not! There are English subtitles but you can appreciate the melodic tones of the conversations in Afrikanis.

Of course, I watched this at home but I believe a big screen movie theater experience would better showcase the film. The photograph is wonderful and speaks to the virtues of simplicity. I found the film very inspiring.
